George Bacovia (real name George Vasiliu Andone * 5. jul. / 17th September  1881 greg. In Bacau ; † 22. May 1957 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian poet .

Life

Bacovia was born as George Andone Vasiliu in Bacau. He was the son of the merchant Dimitrie Vasiliu. Bacovia already showed his artistic talent during his school days. He wrote poetry, performed well on the violin and other instruments, and showed great talent for drawing. In 1899 he received the first prize in the national competition "Tinerimii române" for artistic natural drawings for his art of drawing. After high school he began to study law in Bucharest. He finished this in 1911.

He published his first poem Și toate (And everything) in the magazine Literatorul under the name George V. From 1925 on, the ailing and depressed poet lived temporarily in Bucharest. At the age of 47 he married the teacher Agatha Grigorescu. With her he had a son. In 1933 the family finally moved to Bucharest. Bacovia died there in 1957. The University of George Bacovia Bacau in his hometown bears his name. A memorial was set up in the house where he was born.
