George L. Cassiday (born March 11, 1941 ) is an American physicist.

Cassiday studied at the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor's degree in 1963 and at Cornell University with a PhD in 1968. He has been at the University of Utah since 1970 , where he has been a full professor since 1981.

He was visiting professor at the University of Michigan (1985) and at the Center for International Studies and Arms Control at Stanford University (1985-1991).

Cassiday developed the second generation Cerenkov detector tank in the Utah neutrino detector. In this context he also built an underground telescope for cosmic rays to determine the density of the rock masses and the degree of shielding above the neutrino detector. He later built the first fluorescent radiation detector for cosmic rays , the Fly's Eye in Utah (after testing the technique on the University of New Mexico's John Linsley detector). In 1991 the so far highest energetic cosmic particle was discovered there ( Oh-My-God-Particle ).

In 2008 he received the Panofsky Prize with Pierre Sokolsky .
