Pierre Sokolsky (born January 15, 1946 in Paris ) is a French-American astrophysicist .

Sokolsky graduated from the University of Chicago with a bachelor's degree in 1967 and received his master's degree from the University of Illinois in 1969 , where he received his doctorate in 1973.

Sokolsky has been a professor at the University of Utah since 1981, with a full professorship since 1988 and as a Distinguished Professor of Physics and Astronomy since 2011 . From 2003 to 2007 he was head of the physics faculty and from 2007 to 2014 dean of the College of Sciences . He also built the astronomy education at the University of Utah.

He is an expert in ultra-high energy cosmic rays . He was involved in the Fly's Eye Experiment in Utah, which developed the atmospheric fluorescence technique for observing high-energy cosmic rays . Since 2002 he has been co-speaker of the Japanese-American Telescope Array Project in Millard County , Utah, completed in 2007 , which detects high-energy cosmic radiation with a combination of over 500 scintillation particle detectors and three fluorescence detectors.

He proposed the use of large salt bodies for the detection of extraterrestrial neutrinos (SalSa).

In 1977 Sokolsky was a Sloan Research Fellow and in 2002 he was a Guggenheim Fellow . In 2006 he was awarded the Governor of Utah's Medal for Science and Technology. In 1999 he received the Distinguished Research Award from the University of Utah and in 2006 the Governor's Medal for Science and Technology of the state of Utah. He has been a Fellow of the American Physical Society since 2002 .

In 2008 he received the Panofsky Prize with George Cassiday .
