George Chaloupka

George Chaloupka (born September 6, 1932 in Týniště nad Orlicí , Czechoslovakia , † October 18, 2011 in Darwin , Australia ) was a Czech-Australian explorer of Aboriginal rock art .

Life

Jiří Chaloupka grew up with two brothers in Týniště nad Orlicí. The younger brother died early. After the communists came to power, Jiří Chaloupka emigrated with his older brother to Australia via Germany in 1948 , where he lived first in Perth , then in Melbourne and finally in Darwin. Since 1973 he has worked as curator at the Northern Territory Museum and documented over 3500 rock art in Kakadu National Park and Arnhem Land .

In 2008, he founded the George Chaloupka Fellowship to promote and support research and conservation of rock art in Arnhem Land.
