Dora Lopes (born November 6, 1922 in Rio de Janeiro , † December 24, 1983 in São Paulo ), with full name Dora Lopes de Freitas Lopes , was a Brazilian singer and composer of the Música Popular Brasileira , especially Samba .

Life

Dora Lopes left home at the age of 14 to become a radio singer. After singing in nightclubs for some time, she appeared on Ary Barroso's radio program on Rádio Nacional in the late 1940s . In 1948 she recorded her first record and became a regular guest on the most famous Brazilian radio stations of the time, as did Rádio Mayrink Veiga . This was followed by further recordings with the record companies Sinter , Copacabana , Mocambo and Continental . In 1962 she received the Prêmio Chico Viola Prize for her composition Samba da Madrugada , together with Carminha Mascarenhas and Herotildes José Nascimento. Dora Lopes toured France , Italy , Switzerland , Venezuela , Mexico and the USA . In Brazil, she lived mainly in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo and worked with musicians such as Dolores Duran, Sylvia Telles , Dalva de Oliveira, Pixinguinha and Ataulfo ​​Alves. In total, she has recorded more than twenty records. Her best-known compositions include Samba da Madrugada , Ponto de Encontro and Velório de Sambista .

In 1965 she had a serious car accident due to heavy rain on the Via Dutra motorway between Rio and São Paulo near Pindamonhangaba (SP). As a result, she had to undergo numerous operations and her career went into decline.

Her later life was determined by precarious finances. After a week in a coma, she died on Christmas Eve 1983 at the age of 62 in the Paulistânia Hospital in São Paulo at the age of 62. Her former secretary Darcy and her friend, the singer Edith Veiga, were by her side until the end. About 40 people, mostly friends and family, attended her funeral at the Cemitério Gethsêmani cemetery . In addition to Edith Veiga, the Velório de Sambista ("Laying out a Sama singer") Sang, Agnaldo Timóteo and Adylson Godoy were present from the show business. There were also some restaurateurs of the Paulistani nightlife such as Marizinha, an owner of the Bug House on Rua Augusta, where Dora Lopes made her last public appearance.
