George Eldon Ladd
George Eldon Ladd (July 31, 1911 - October 5, 1982 ) was an American Baptist pastor , evangelical theologian , New Testament scholar at Fuller Theological Seminary and author of the well-known book A Theology of the New Testament .
Life
Ladd turned to the Christian faith in 1929 . He then studied for four years at Gordon College of Theology and Mission and was subsequently ordained pastor of a Baptist church. He continued his studies at Gordon Divinity School while pastoring various churches. He graduated from Boston University and received his Ph.D. in 1949. at Harvard University . In 1950 he became a lecturer at Fuller Theological Seminary. For the following years he endeavored to gain acceptance for the methods of historical-critical theology in evangelical theology and to break away from the defensive stance of Christian fundamentalism . Ladd was considered an influential evangelical New Testament scholar , but also a critic of dispensationalism . His book A Theology of the New Testament , first published in 1974 and translated into French, Spanish and Chinese, is considered one of the most influential books for evangelical theologians in the United States.
A biography of his life was published in 2008 entitled "A Place at the Table: George Eldon Ladd and the Rehabilitation of Evangelical Scholarship in America".
