George Embiricos

George Embiricos ( Greek Γεώργιος Α. Εμπειρίκος ; Georgios A. Embiríkos ) (* 1920 ; † 2011 ) was a Greek shipowner , entrepreneur and art collector .

Life

Embiricos came from a Greek shipowner family and worked as a shipowner throughout his life. He studied law in Athens and Cambridge. He was also involved in the art trade and acquired numerous paintings. In 2011, shortly before his death, he presumably sold the painting The Card Players by Paul Cézanne to the government of Qatar , as reported by international media. Other works collected by him, including Pablo Picasso's Marie-Thérèse-Walter portrait with tulips from 1932 , for which 35 to 50 million dollars alone were expected, were auctioned in London and New York City in 2012. The painting " Les Poseuses " by Georges Seurat now belongs to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen . Embiricos owned the superyacht Astarte II .
