George Finch (architect)

George Finch ( October 8, 1930 in Tottenham - February 13, 2013 ) was a British architect. He was a staunch socialist and believed that architecture could change the lives of post-war Londoners. Finch's ideals drove his passion to design social housing and public facilities for ordinary people at the highest level.

Life

Son of a milkman, Finch was evacuated to Saffron Walden , Essex, during World War II , where he graduated from Newport Free Grammar School . Finch then studied architecture at the North London Polytechnic . In 1950 he received a scholarship from the LCC and moved to the Architectural Association School of Architecture . His senior year 1955 included Neave Brown, Kenneth Frampton , Patrick Hodgkinson, William Gillitt, and Roy Stout.

Private

In 1955 Finch married Brenda Vicary, with whom he had five children. The marriage ended in divorce. In the late 1960s, he met the architect Kate Macintosh, with whom he stayed together for the rest of his life. Their son comes from the relationship.
