George Francis Hampson
Sir George Francis Hampson, 10th Baronet (born January 14, 1860 in Marylebone , Middlesex , † October 15, 1936 in his residence at Thurnham Court in Maidstone ), was a British entomologist .
Life
Hampson attended Charterhouse School and studied at Exeter College, Oxford. He ran a tea plantation in the Nigri Hills in Tamil Nadu (then Madras administrative district) in India. It was there that he became interested in butterflies and on his return to England he volunteered for the Natural History Museum . In 1895 he was offered an assistant position there and from 1901 to 1905 he was acting assistant keeper responsible for entomology (as the successor to Arthur Gardiner Butler ).
He published a monograph on the small butterflies of India.
In 1896 he inherited the title of Baronet , of Taplow in the County of Buckingham from his father . In 1893 he married Minnie Frances Clark-Kennedy, with whom he had two daughters and a son.
