George Halban

George Rudolf Wilhelm Philipp Halban (born July 14, 1915 in Vienna ; † May 25, 1998 ) was an Austrian writer from the Halban family .

Life

George Halban was born in Vienna on July 14, 1915, the son of the gynecologist Josef von Halban , who was ennobled in 1917, and the chamber singer Selma Kurz . After serving in the Austrian cavalry, he emigrated to America before the outbreak of war , where he was drafted as a soldier shortly after Pearl Harbor . As one of the youngest majors in the US Army in World War II and the Korean War , he was highly decorated.

Later he was a lecturer for tactical questions at the tank school in Fort Knox , then a general staff officer and for five years official military advisor to the Turkish general staff in eastern Turkey . Then he returned to Europe, where he studied history at the University of Munich and wrote some novels.

The soprano Dési Halban was his sister.

Surname

As a child he was called Rudolf. The father was transferred to the hereditary nobility in 1917 and since then the child has been called Rudolf von Halban. He later used his first name, George.
