George Harrison Shull

George Harrison Shull (born April 15, 1874 in Clark County , Ohio , USA , † September 28, 1954 in Princeton , New Jersey ) was an American botanist and plant geneticist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Shull ".

Shull discovered the heterosis effect in corn . His discovery made it possible to increase the yield in maize production by up to 50%. Today only hybrid maize is sown in economically working farms. Since 1918 he was a member of the American Philosophical Society . In 1940 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
