George Irving Bell

George Irving Bell (born August 4, 1926 in Evanston (Illinois) , † May 28, 2000 ) was an American climber and scientist.

Life

George Irving Bell studied physics at Harvard University and worked in the field of theoretical nuclear physics at Los Alamos National Laboratory after completing his doctorate . In 1967 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society . He later focused on biology and successfully conducted research in the field of immunology .

As a mountaineer, he took part in several important American expeditions in the 1950s and 1960s. His most important success was the first ascent of Masherbrum (7821 m) in 1960 with Willi Unsoeld .
