George Jerrard

George Birch Jerrard (born 1804 in Cornwell, Oxfordshire , England, † November 23, 1863 in Long Stratton, Norfolk , England) was a British mathematician.

He studied at Trinity College, Dublin from 1821 to 1827. Jerrard is known for his studies of fifth degree equations . For this he found that they can always be obtained through a polynomial transformation to an equation of form

can be reduced, whereby apart from this simplified equation, the so-called Bring-Jerrard normal form , only equations up to the fourth degree have to be solved. Jerrard's result for the case of the fifth degree equation had already been found by the mathematician Erland Bring , but Jerrard also formulated his approach for equations of higher degrees.
