George Kahn

George Kahn (born January 7, 1952 ) is an American jazz pianist and composer .

Live and act

Kahn grew up in New Rochelle (New York) and received classical piano lessons from the age of ten. He began composing during high school; while studying composition at Brandeis University , he dealt with improvised music as well as the work of Charles Ives , John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen . Under the influence of John Coltrane's album Kulu Sé Mama , he turned more to jazz and performed in the Boston area after his graduation, while he lived in Cape Cod for several years ; In 1976 he moved to California.

There he played for several years in a New Age formation, studied arrangement with Spud Murphy and performed in local venues. In the late 1990s he became known for his first album under his own name and has since made a number of recordings on the Playing Records label . On his debut album Out of Time he played with drummer Billy Higgins and bassist Richard Reid .

In the next few years, George Kahn worked with a trio of bassist Dave Carpenter and drummer Joe LaBarbera ; for the album Freedom Vessel he brought in the wind players Eric Marienthal and Bobby Rodriguez . in his next trio he played with Karl Vincent and MB Gordy ( Midnight Brew ); Mid-2000s with bassist Brian Bromberg and drummer Alex Acuña ( Cover Up! ). Instead of standards, he plays the songs of his youth from Cream , Pink Floyd , Bill Withers and The Beatles . Kahn is married to the singer and music teacher Diana Zaslove Kahn.

Prizes and awards

In 2008 he received the Chuck Niles Bebop Award for instrumental jazz at the Temecula Valley International Jazz Festival.
