George Kent (2017)

George Peter Kent (* 1969 ) is an American diplomat who has worked in the United States' Foreign Service since 1992. Since September 4, 2018, under President Donald Trump, he has been Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, representative of the US State Department for Ukraine , Republic of Moldova , Belarus , Georgia , Armenia and Azerbaijan .

Life

education

After attending the Porter-Gaud School in Charleston , South Carolina , which he graduated in 1985, George Kent began studying Russian history and literature at Harvard University, completing it with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He then obtained a Master of Arts degree from the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University in 1992 . From 2011 to 2012 he studied again at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF) of the National Defense University and graduated with a Master of Science (MS).

Career

After two internships in the department of the US State Department responsible for the Soviet Union in the late 1980s, Kent joined the US Foreign Service in 1992. He then worked as an attaché in Poland , Ukraine , Uzbekistan and Thailand . He speaks Ukrainian, Russian and Thai, a little Polish, German and Italian. From 1995 to 1997 he was the economic officer for trade, the environment and the fight against drugs in Warsaw, Poland. From 2004 to 2008 Kent was Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM - see Wiki) in Kiev , Ukraine. During this time the Orange Revolution occurred in this country. From 2015 to 2018 again as Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) at the American Embassy in Kiev , Ukraine. In mid-2018, Kent was asked by the then Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs , A. Wess Mitchell , if he would like to join his team as his deputy. On September 4, 2018, he was appointed to his current position in the State Department ( United States Department of Foreign Affairs ) as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian affairs - responsible for Ukraine , Moldova , Belarus , Georgia , Armenia and Azerbaijan .

Private

George Kent has been married to Velida Kitaina (* 1970 in Uzbekistan ), a teacher, since 1996 . Velida Kitaina's grandparents were among the 190,000 or so Crimean Tatars who were deported by Stalin to Central Asia , mostly to Uzbekistan, in May 1944 on charges of collective collaboration with the Nazis . The couple have three children - their two daughters Elina and Jana and their son George, named after his father.
