George Livanos
George Livanos (born August 9, 1926 in New Orleans , † June 1, 1997 in Athens ) was a Greek shipowner .
Life
George Livanos had both Greek and US citizenship. He served in the US Army in Japan and Korea after World War II . He was married to Fotini Carras and had a son, Peter Livanos , and a daughter. Livanos died in Athens at the age of 70.
Business life
In the 1950s Livanos went to Greece and joined the shipping company that his father and uncle had founded there. In 1994 he retired from business life and handed over the management of his company to his son Peter Livanos. In the year of his death, his company's fleet of Ceres Hellenic Shipping Enterprises Ltd. 91 ships with a total transport capacity of 4.6 million tons, making it the largest merchant fleet in Greece.
Through his sisters Eugenia , who married Stavros Niarchos twice, and Tina , who married Aristotle Onassis and later became Stavros Niarchos' wife after Eugenia's death, he was related by marriage to two of Greece's great shipowners.
