Dick's Picks Volume 1 is a Live - double album of the band Grateful Dead and the first of the Dick's Picks series.
history
The album was recorded during a performance on December 19, 1973 at the Curtis Hixon Convention Center in Tampa , Florida , and released in December 1993.
The idea behind the Dick's Picks series is the same as behind the Vault series: they wanted to take care of the fans ( deadheads ) who have always created bootlegs in the so-called taping areas at concerts, swapped them among themselves and distributed them. Grateful Dead could mostly offer the same songs from the same concerts in a better recording quality or revise them afterwards in order to bring them to the market in a better quality.
The difference to the previous live albums and thus also to the Vault series is that these albums have always been recorded with a multi-track recorder and edited before they were released. The Dick's Picks series, on the other hand, is a stereo recording (two-track tape recording). So the band decided to bring the supposedly poor quality recordings onto the market. To indicate this, the CD is provided with a Caveat-emptor sticker. This is also confirmed on the back of the album cover :
" The recording in has been lovingly remastered directly from the original two-track master tape and is therefore not immune to the various glitches, splices, reel changes and other aural gremlins contained on said original. Dick's Picks differs from our From The Vault series in that we simply did not have access to complete shows (nor the modern mixing capabilities afforded by multitrack tapes) But we think the historical value and musical quality of these tapes more than compensates for any technical anomalies ... In other words what you hear is what you get. And what you get ain't bad! "
Donna Godchaux did not appear at the concert due to her pregnancy. In the credits it is listed as a giving birth . In addition, she was subsequently responsible for sound effects.
The series itself was started by Dick Latvala , who was the band's official recording archivist from 1985 until your death in 1999. Even after his death, the Dick's Picks series was continued by David Lemieux, with the help of sound engineer Jeffrey Norman. In many Dick's Picks albums, the name Latvala is shown or hidden somewhere on the cover as a souvenir . The thirty-sixth album in the Dick's Picks series was released in October 2005. From vol. 15 the albums were digitally revised with HDCD .
