Grayfolded 1969–1996 (mostly simply called Grayfolded ) is a compilation - double album by the band Grateful Dead , which only contains variants and different recordings of the song Dark Star .

history

The song, written by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter , is considered the figurehead of the Grateful Dead and is counted among the 500 most important songs in rock history by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . Between 1968 and 1993 the song was played over a hundred times at concerts, mostly with improvisations .

The digital recordings of the concerts were passed on to John Oswald . In 1985 John Oswald developed a method of editing which he personally called plunderphonics . Different elements and parts were converted into a piece of music, some were played faster, others slower, tones were overlaid by others, different parts were connected differently, etc. He developed this method for the Wired Society Electro-Acoustic Conference in Toronto and gave its elaboration the title: "Plunderphonics, or audio piracy as a compositional prerogative"

The crew member David Gans collected Oswald's edited CDs and told Phil Lesh about them. He presented the idea to the rest of the band to bring out such an album. Oswald himself had never dealt with the Grateful Dead up to this point and decided on the song Dark Star . Oswald himself commented on this:

"Phil Lesh called me up and talked me into doing it. At that point, I hadn't listened to any Grateful Dead music in about twenty years. I did think I was qualified, because I do think it's often a good idea to come into a project without a lot of prior knowledge and get kind of an alien's overview of what the music seems to be, and then put in your own two cents of what you think it should be. And I think that was the case for this. During the course of working on it, I went to a couple of Grateful Dead concerts, but other than that, I haven't listened to anything except these hundred versions of 'Dark Star' that I found in the vaults. "

Oswald selected recordings from 1968 to 1993 for his work from all the Dark Star material. Oswald put together two CDs from this selection: Grayfolded: Transitive Axis (1994/95) and Grayfolded: Mirror Ashes (1996). Grayfolded: Transitive Axis was sold as a single CD in a double sleeve. The note stating that one had the right to two CDs was attached to this cover:

"This is an advance order subscription for disc 2 of Gray Folded, including additional liner notes and dates for the source concerts for both discs.
Release date is scheduled for early '95. In the event that Disc 2 is completed early you will receive an advanced copy from the first pressing. "

The Canadian professor of ethnomusicology Rob Bowman, who won the 1996 Grammy for Best Album Text for The Complete Stax / Volt Soul Singles, Vol. 3: 1972–1975 , said of the album:

"The result of all this is stunning. You have multiple Jerry's, sometimes playing at the same time, and sometimes in the same lead. For example, you might hear a line start with what is obviously a 1969 Jerry, and end with an obvious 1989 Jerry. The same with the rest of the band. He really captures the nuances of Dark Stars in general, and there are wondrous, surprising, and very funny things going on. I love Dark Star, and I was leery read this be awful, but it's not. It really holds the spirit of Dark Star, and is a wonderful testament to the originality and depth of the Dead's music through the years. "

Mirror Ashes was completed shortly before the death of Jerry Garcia.

The rights to the songs are owned by John Oswald and McGannahan Skyjellyfetti . The pseudonym McGannahan Skyjellyfetti was used by the Grateful Dead to denote songs that were jointly created within the band. The name was based on a character from Kenneth Patchen's work Memoirs of a Shy Pornographer .
