Reclam's song guide

The Reclams Liedführer is a handy music guide that was first published in 1973 by the Philipp Reclam jun. was published in Stuttgart . He is dedicated to the artistic solo song and its "epic sister", the ballad . The song guide is arranged according to style, country and composer. Up to the 5th edition (2000) the work was written by Werner Oehlmann . The 6th edition was completely revised by Axel Bauni and appeared in 2008.

Structure / content

On 1,315 pages, the volume contains an introductory section, the dictionary section and an appendix.

The introductory part consists of the foreword and an introduction. In the foreword Werner Oehlmann wrote, among other things: “The song guide deals with the solo art song from its medieval beginnings to the present day. He wants to give the singer as well as the concert and radio listeners an overview of the European song literature ... "

The lexicon part is subdivided into the sections “From the Middle Ages to the end of the Baroque”, “Enlightenment and Classic”, “Romanticism”, and “20. Century". It does not contain any biographies , but it does contain music-historical classifications and descriptions of the composers' works . The composers are arranged chronologically according to the year of their birth. This part begins with Minnesang and Meistersang (11th century) and ends with Aribert Reimann (* 1936) in the section “contemporary song forms” .

Each song composer is presented with his or her song creations (solo songs, ballads). For example, about 150 pages are available for Franz Schubert and over 50 for Robert Schumann , Johannes Brahms and Hugo Wolf . A total of 470 musical examples explain the texts.

The appendix contains bibliographical references, in alphabetical order a list of the song titles and beginnings and the composers and poets. It closes with the table of contents.
