George Macartney (Consul General)

Sir George Macartney (born January 19, 1867 - May 19, 1945 ) was the British Consul General in Kashgar at the end of the 19th / beginning of the 20th century and a collector of antiques.

In Kashgar he and his wife, Lady Catherine Macartney, supported archaeologists traveling through in search of Buddhist treasures from the Silk Road . Her guests included Albert von Le Coq and Aurel Stein . Lady Macartney wrote a book about her time in Kashgar entitled "An English Lady in Chinese Turkestan".

In 1900 Macartney was inducted into the Order of the Indian Empire as a Companion and knighted as Knight Commander of the same order in 1913 .

His successor as Consul General was Clarmont Skrine, who wrote a book with Pamela Nightingale on Macartney's diplomatic career in Kashgar.
