George R. Carey (* 1851 ; † 1906 ) was an American inventor .

Life

George R. Carey worked as a land surveyor for the city of Boston .

He learned of the discovery of Photokonduktanz of selenium by Willoughby Smith from 1873 and made 1875-1879 a rough draft of an image transmission system ( English selenium camera ). It was a first step towards the transmission of images by breaking them down into their elements when sending them and putting them together by the recipient (see also the history of television ).

He published his idea of ​​a telectroscope in two articles in Scientific American on May 17, 1879 and June 5, 1880. The Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum acquired his manuscripts and diary .
