Life

Ruxton was of Irish on his father's side and Scottish on his mother's side. He fought in the First Carlist War and was honored at the age of 18. He then joined the 89th Regiment of Foot and was posted to Canada . Here he met Indians for the first time and went hunting with them. In 1843 Ruxton took his leave and returned to England .

He planned to cross Africa along the Tropic of Capricorn , but this was boycotted by the British authorities. As a British and later Mexican trade emissary, Ruxton undertook daring journeys in northern Mexico and on the upper Arkansas River . Here he met trappers and mountain men . In 1848 he died of dysentery .

In 1849 his Life in the Far West appeared (German: Trapperleben in the far west ). This book inspired numerous western writers , especially with regard to the portrayal of the trappers. Another work, Adventures in Mexico and the Rocky Mountains , has not yet been translated into German.
