George Phalen

George S. Phalen (born December 2, 1911 in Peoria (Illinois) , USA, † April 14, 1998 in Dallas ) was an American orthopedic surgeon , after whom the Phalen symbol is named.

Phalen graduated from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois in 1932 , and graduated from Northwestern University with a master's degree in medicine in 1937 . After three years at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, he joined the army in 1942, where he worked as an orthopedic surgeon. After the war, he established a hand surgery practice in Cleveland and taught at Case Western Reserve University . From 1970 to 1980 he practiced in Dallas.

Phalen helped found the American Society for Surgery of the Hand , organized the Society's first meeting in 1946, and became its President in 1960. From 1964 to 1965 he was President of the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons . In 1969 he became chairman of the orthopedic section of the American Medical Association .
