Georges Sabra ( Arabic جورج صبرا, DMG Ǧūrǧ Ṣabrā , born July 11, 1947 in Qatana , Rif Dimaschq , Syria ) is a Syrian politician who belongs to the Christian minority . He was elected President of the Syrian National Council, the largest opposition group in the country , on November 9, 2012 in Doha, the capital of Qatar . His predecessors as chairman of the National Council were Abdelbaset Sieda and Burhan Ghaliun .

Sabra is an Arab Christian as a member of the Greek Orthodox Church . He graduated from Damascus University and received his PhD in geography in 1971. In 1978 Sabra graduated from Indiana University and received a PhD in Technological Education Systems. He worked as a geography teacher and screenwriter and is one of the co-designers of the Arabic version of Sesame Street .

From 1970 to 1995 he was a member of the so-called Politburo faction of Riad al-Turk in the Syrian Communist Party , from 1985 as a member of the Central Committee. As a result, he was arrested for the first time in 1987 in the course of a raid by the Assad regime against the party. Sabra is one of the 250 signatories of the Damascus Declaration in 2005. When the peaceful protests against the regime began in 2011, he was arrested again and only released a few months later.
