George Wood Webster (born December 1, 1870 in Oshkosh , Wisconsin ; died July 30, 1953 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) was an American railroad manager. He was president of Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railway (Soo Line).

Life

George W. Webster began working as a clerk for the Milwaukee, Lake Shore and Western Railroad in 1886 . In 1893 he moved to the Wisconsin Central Railway and became secretary to the receivership and later the president. In 1906 he became Secretary (managing director) of this railway company and after its takeover by Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railway in 1909 he continued this position at the parent company.

From 1922 he was vice president of the Soo Line. On September 1, 1937, he succeeded Clive T. Jaffray as president of the railway company. Due to the global economic crisis and poor harvests, the company had to file for bankruptcy at the end of 1937 and George W. Webster was appointed bankruptcy administrator together with Joseph Chapman. The reorganization of the company, completed in 1944, took place under his leadership. He retired with the end of the bankruptcy administration, but remained a member of the board of directors until September 1952.

After a long illness, he died on July 30, 1953
