The location or the local boundaries of the "Georgenberg" area can be named roughly with the current course of the road Wiesengasse - Georgenstraße - Grazer Straße - Bahnhofstraße. In 1833, today's Georgenstrasse was created through an existing natural, but also very steep mountain cut, which meant that the Georgenberg could also be reached by carts from the market square about 35 meters below. From 1926 to 1936, a direct connection was created between the market square and the train station (Bahnhofstrasse) by creating an artificial mountain incision above and the material obtained at the foot of the Georgenberg, in the area of the open-air theater , and the Schwanenteich. By this measure, the natural continuous course of the ridge was interrupted and the Georgenberg got a certain independence.

Emergence

The formation of the Georgenberg goes back to processes that took place here during the Middle Ice Age . The area around Spremberg, with the Georgenberg as the terminal moraine, formed the maximum southern extent of the ice border.

Naming

The patron saint of chivalry, Saint George or Saint George, for whom a chapel was built on this hill in the 13th century (exact dates are not available) and named after him is the namesake for the Georgenberg . "Chapel of St. George", as the original name was, became "St. George's Chapel" over the centuries and later only colloquially "George Chapel".
