Georges Auguste Darzens

Auguste Georges Darzens (born July 12, 1867 in Moscow , † September 10, 1954 in Paris ) was a French chemist .

Live and act

Georges Darzens grew up in Moscow, where his father was a merchant, importing luxury goods and wines from France, among other things. His mother was a concert pianist and was related to Léon Frapié . He attended preparatory schools for the elite universities in Paris from the age of 13 and studied at the Paris École polytechnique from 1886 . At first he tended to astronomy, which he gave up because of poor eyesight, then physics and mathematics (Agrégation in Physik 1895) and finally medicine from 1890, in which he received his doctorate in 1899. He dealt with physiological optics and published a theory of color perception. His chemistry professor was Louis Édouard Grimaux . The Darzens glycidate condensation , which he discovered in 1904, is named after him. From 1897 to 1920 he was head of the LT Pivier perfumery laboratory. In addition, from the 1890s onwards he dealt with automobiles, which he also built himself and which he drove in races. From 1912 to 1937 he was professor of chemistry at the École polytechnique.

Sometimes the Darzens olefin acylation is named after him.
