Georgi Petrov (judoka)

Georgi Angelow Petrow ( Bulgarian Георги Петров ; born September 17, 1954 in Montana ) is a former Bulgarian judoka . He won a silver and a bronze medal at world championships and was European champion in 1981.

Athletic career

The 1.73 m tall Georgi Petrov von Levski Sofia competed in light middleweight (up to 78 kg) until 1984, and in middleweight (up to 86 kg) from 1985.

At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, he defeated Vladimír Bárta from Czechoslovakia by referee decision (Yusei-gachi) in his first fight . In the quarterfinals he was defeated by Schota Chabareli from the Soviet Union with a coca rating and in the round of hope he lost to Harald Heinke from the GDR with a Yuko rating. The following year at the European Championships in 1981 , Petrow won the final against Roman Novotny from Czechoslovakia. Three and a half months later, the 1981 World Championships took place in Maastricht . Petrow was subject to the Japanese Jirō Kase in the quarterfinals, after beating South Korean Hwang Jin-soo in the hope round , Petrov met Novotny again in the battle for bronze and won the bronze medal.

At the European Championships in 1982 and 1983 Petrov dropped out prematurely, in 1984 he finished seventh. He missed the 1984 Olympic Games because of the Olympic boycott . In the alternative competitions held in Warsaw, he took fifth place.

After changing the weight class, Petrov defeated the Austrian Peter Seisenbacher in the quarter-finals at the European Championships in Hamar in 1985 , and in the semifinals he was defeated by Vitali Pesnjak from the Soviet Union. In the battle for bronze he defeated Roland Borawski from the GDR. Four months later, the 1985 World Championships took place in Seoul . Petrow defeated the French Fabien Canu in the quarter-finals and the Dutch Ben Spijkers in the semi-finals . He lost the final against Peter Seisenbacher. At the 1986 European Championships in Belgrade, Petrov lost to the Hungarian János Gyáni in the battle for a bronze medal . In 1987 he also reached the battle for bronze at the World Championships in Essen, this time he was defeated by the British Densign White . At the end of his career, Petrow was eliminated from János Gyáni in the round of 16 of the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul.
