Vitali Ivanovich Pesnjak ( Russian Виталий Иванович Песняк ; born January 16, 1961 ) is a former Soviet judoka who won a bronze medal at world championships and was three times European champion.

Career

Vitali Pesnjak competed in the weight class up to 86 kilograms, the middleweight. In 1980 he was a junior European champion in this weight class. At the 1983 European Championships in Paris, he defeated Detlef Ultsch from the GDR in the quarterfinals and Stanko Lopatic from Yugoslavia in the semifinals . In the final he defeated the Austrian Peter Seisenbacher . In the same year he won the Spartakiad and the Soviet championships. In 1984 Aleksandrs Jackēvičs won the Soviet championships before Pesnjak. At the European Championships in Liege in 1984 Pesnjak won the quarter-finals against the Dutchman Ben Spijkers and in the semifinals against the French Fabien Canu . In the final, Pesnjak met Roland Borawski from the GDR and won his second title. The Soviet Union did not take part in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. At the alternative games of the socialist states held in Warsaw, Pesnjak won the final against Karel Purkert from Czechoslovakia.

In 1985 Pesnjak defeated the French François Fournier in the quarter-finals at the European Championships in Hamar and the Bulgarian Georgi Petrow in the semi-finals . With his final victory over Michael Bazynski from the Federal Republic of Germany, Pesnjak received the gold medal for the third time in a row. At the World Championships in Seoul Pesnjak defeated Marc Meiling from Germany in the quarter-finals . After his semi-final defeat by Peter Seisenbacher, Pesnjak won a bronze medal. The following year Pesnjak was defeated at the European Championships in Belgrade against Ben Spijkers and Fabien Canu and finished in fifth place. At the Goodwill Games in Moscow, he was defeated by his Soviet compatriot Alexander Sivtsevim finals. Two months later he defeated Zivtsev in the finals of the Soviet championships. In 1988 Pesnjak was once again Soviet champion. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Pesnjak started for Belarus in 1993 and finished third in a tournament in Tarcento, Italy.
