from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Georgikon was a Hungarian agricultural university in Keszthely and is now part of the Pannonia University of Veszprém . The name is derived from the Georgica Virgils .

history

The Georgikon was founded in 1797 by György Graf Festetics von Tolna , at a time when profound reforms were taking place in the agriculture of the Kingdom of Hungary . It is considered the oldest agricultural college in Europe. The Georgikon had the largest private library in Hungary with a library inventory of 80,000 volumes at the time. The school building was completed in 1807. This year a forest and hunting school was attached. A meierhof was built for practical lessons .

László Festetics, who had been György's successor since 1819, also sponsored the Georgikon. Under him, Hungarian was declared the language of instruction.

Teaching continued in the original main building until 1848. After the revolution in 1848, operations were not resumed until 1865 under the name of the National Agricultural and Forestry College . In 1869 the name was briefly changed to the National Agricultural School , but immediately thereafter to the Royal Hungarian Agricultural College .

In 1949, classes were suspended for a period of five years and only resumed in 1954 as the Keszthely Agricultural Academy . In 1962 the institution was reorganized as an agricultural university with two faculties, the original one in Keszthely and another in Mosonmagyaróvár .

Since 1989 the university has been part of the Pannonia University in Veszprém as a separate Georgikon Faculty of Agriculture .
