Scaffolding in Berlin (1931)

Scaffolders (in Austria / Switzerland also Gerüster or scaffold fitter ) establish frameworks for various applications, from detached houses to bridges and smaller apartment buildings or TV towers to skyscrapers. The construction of movable work platforms, grandstands or weather protection halls is also part of the scaffolder's field of application.

requirements

Scaffolding is a recognized training occupation in industry and craft in Germany. The training lasts three years. Applicants should be technically gifted, physically resilient and free from giddiness. Since scaffolding workers mostly work outdoors, interested parties should also be insensitive to the weather.

In Switzerland, since the introduction of the new Vocational Training Act in 2004, the official job title is no longer "scaffolding fitter / in EFZ", but "Polybauer EFZ specialization: scaffolding". For a large number of the positions in Switzerland, a completed course in dealing with personal protective equipment against falls from a height (PPE) is required. This must be recognized by SUVA.

independence

The scaffolding trade is subject to the craft regulations and has been part of the so-called Appendix A since April 1, 1998, i.e. the full trade. There are various options for starting your own business as a scaffolding builder. Prerequisites are 10 years of verifiable professional experience, a master craftsman's certificate for a trade in the building trade or the assistance of a concession holder whose operational management fulfills the requirements for the exemption permit. In order to prevent the concession holders from only being employed for a sham, the chambers of crafts insist in their employment contracts on a monthly employment volume of at least 80 hours, i.e. an employment subject to social insurance. Furthermore, scaffolding can also be erected by craftsmen who are named in the transitional law on the occasion of the second law amending the craft regulations. These include trades that require a master's degree, such as masons, but also trades that do not require approval, such as tiling, slab and mosaic laying.

There are only three vocational schools for scaffolders in all of Germany. These are located in Dortmund , Berlin and Groß-Gerau . There are also three external training centers in Dortmund, Bernau near Berlin and Weiterstadt .

As an independent scaffolding builder, you are subject to membership of a Chamber of Crafts (HWK), the SKG , the Federal Miners 'Union and the employers' liability insurance association .

The duration of the training is three years, after the second year of training there is an intermediate examination .

Promotion opportunities

Further and advanced training enables:

  • Scaffolding master (requirement for self-employment)
  • Certified scaffolding column leader
  • Engineer
  • Trainer (also part of the master craftsman examination)

By attending a technical college , advanced professions can be learned:

  • Technician for business administration
  • Industrial business economist for the construction industry

After attending a technical college, it is possible to study at a technical college (FH):

  • Specializing in civil engineering

After successfully passing the master craftsman's examination, it is also possible to study directly (admission requirements are country-specific).

There are 2511 scaffolding companies in Germany that employ 25211 scaffolding workers who are subject to social security contributions. Scaffolding builders in Germany are primarily small and medium-sized companies with an average of 10 employees. 57% of the scaffolders are employed by companies with fewer than 20 employees.
