Gerald Ellison

Gerald Alexander Ellison KCVO PC ( August 19, 1910 - October 18, 1992 ) was an Anglican bishop . He was Bishop of Chester from 1955 to 1973 and Bishop of London from 1973 to 1981 .

Youth and priestly years

Ellison was the son of a royal chaplain. He went to Westminster School and studied at New College (Oxford) . He was on the team of the Oxford University Boat Club in the Boat Races in 1932 and 1933 and was later referee of the Boat Race.

Ellison studied at Westcott House Seminary in Cambridge and was ordained a deacon in 1935 and a priest in 1936. His first position was as an vicar at Sherborne . from 1937 to 1939 he was chaplain to Cyril Forster Garbett , the Bishop of Winchester . During the Second World War he was chaplain in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and from 1943 chaplain to Cyril Garbett as Archbishop of York. From 1946 to 1950 he was Vicar of St Mark's in Portsea .

Episcopate

In 1950, Ellison was named suffragan bishop of Willesden . He became Bishop of Chester in 1955 , and Bishop of London from 1973 to 1981 . From 1960 to 1981 he was a spiritual lord in the House of Lords . In 1981 he was inducted into the Royal Victorian Order as Knight Commander . After his retirement he was temporarily vicar general of the Diocese of Bermuda.
