Gerald Hamer

Gerald Hamer , a native of Geoffrey Earl Watton , ( November 16, 1886 in South Wales , England - July 6, 1972 in Hollywood , California , USA ) was an English theater and film actor.

Life

Gerald Hamer was born in Wales to John Watton and Evelyn Clara Earl. He appeared for decades as a professional theater actor in England, especially in Shakespeare plays Hamer was regularly seen. He also played twenty plays on Broadway in New York between 1915 and 1937. After having made several film appearances in the British film scene, he moved to Hollywood in the mid-1930s. He made his debut in an uncredited role in the musical Swing Time with Fred Astaire . In the following years he played in almost 30 films, mostly in smaller roles as a British man. His best-known roles embodied Hamer in the Sherlock Holmes series withBasil Rathbone , in which he appeared a total of five times. His role as a psychopathic actor in Die Kralle , who takes on the identity of a postman, is particularly noteworthy .

Gerald Hamer took on guest roles on television from the 1950s, most recently in 1966. He died of a heart attack at the age of 85 . His son Robert Hamer (1911–1963) was a director.
