Gerard van der Geer studied at the University of Leiden , where he also received his doctorate in 1977 under Antonius van de Ven (and Don Zagier ) ( On Hilbert Modular Surfaces of principal congruent subgroups ). Then he was in Bonn at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics until 1978 and later in the Netherlands at the University of Utrecht and the Technical University of Eindhoven . He is currently Professor of Algebra at the Korteweg-de-Vries Institute at the University of Amsterdam .

Van der Geer dealt with the module spaces of algebraic curves and Abelian varieties (Hilbert module areas) and curves over finite fields as well as their applications in coding theory.

His PhD students include Carel Faber and Bert van Geemen.
