Bjorn Engquist

Björn Engquist (born June 2, 1945 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish applied mathematician .

Engquist received his doctorate in numerical mathematics in 1969 from the University of Uppsala under Heinz-Otto Kreiss . He then taught at the University of California, Los Angeles . From 2001 he was professor at Princeton University and director of its program in applied and numerical mathematics, and from 2005 professor at the University of Texas at Austin . Since 1993 he has also been a professor at the Royal Stockholm University of Technology , where he heads the Parallel and Scientific Computing Institute (PSCI).

He deals with numerical analysis and scientific computing and especially with numerical methods for differential equations (such as multiscale modeling) with applications in electrodynamics and hydrodynamics.

With Ami Harten , Stanley Osher and Sukumar Chakravarthy, he developed ENO (Essentially Non Oscillatory) methods for the numerical solution of hyperbolic conservation laws in 1987.

Engquist published over 100 scientific articles and supervised over 30 doctoral students until 2009. He is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering. He was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Warsaw in 1983 and in Berlin in 1998 ( Wavelet based numerical homogenization ) and gave a plenary lecture at the European Congress of Mathematicians in 1992 ( Numerical approximation of hyperbolic conservation laws ). In 1982 he received the first James H. Wilkinson Prize and in 2012 he was awarded the George David Birkhoff Prize . In 2015 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and received the ICCM International Cooperation Award in 2016. He is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences . In 2009/10 and 2010/11 he was on the Abel Prize Committee.

Anna-Karin Tornberg is one of his doctoral students .
