Jacobus van Lint

Jacobus Hendricus van Lint (called Jack van Lint; born September 1, 1932 in Bandung on Java ; †  September 28, 2004 in Nuenen ) was a Dutch mathematician who dealt with number theory and combinatorics .

Live and act

Van Lint went to school in Batavia until 1942 and then in Jackson (Missouri) , Chicago , Bundaberg in Australia, Arnhem and Zwolle . From 1950 he studied at the University of Utrecht , where he received his diploma in 1955 and his doctorate in 1957 under Frederik van der Blij ( Hecke Operators and Euler Products ). In between he was at the Universities of Göttingen and Münster in 1956/1957 . From 1952 to 1956 he was an assistant at the Mathematical Institute in Utrecht, from 1957 to 1959 at the Dutch Research Association and from 1959 to 1997 professor at the TU Eindhoven , where he was rector from 1991 to 1996. After that he was professor emeritus there.

Van Lint is best known for his contributions to coding theory.

In 1966, 1971 and 1977 he was visiting professor at Bell Telephone Laboratories and 1970/1971, 1982/1983, 1988/1989 and 2000 visiting professor at Caltech . Since 1985 he has been a consultant to the Philips research laboratories.

He had been married since 1961 and had two children.

In 1972 he was admitted to the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences , and in 1997 he received the Euler Medal . In 1983 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) ( Partial geometries ). He received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Bergen, Bucharest and Ghent. He was an honorary member of the Dutch Mathematical Society and became a knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion in 1993 .
