Gerardo Hernan Matos Rodríguez (born March 28, 1897 in Montevideo , Uruguay , † April 25, 1948 ibid) was a Uruguayan pianist , composer and journalist . He became known through the tango La Cumparsita , which he wrote in 1916 , which is still the most famous and most played tango of all time.

He grew up as the son of cabaret owner Emilio Matos in Montevideo. He broke off a degree in architecture. He later traveled extensively across Europe and stayed in Paris for a while, but also worked as the Uruguayan consul in Germany. In 1931 he contributed to the film music of Luces de Buenos Aires , which was filmed in Joinville-le-Pont (France) and in which Carlos Gardel played the lead role.

In addition to La Cumparsita , he also composed the tangos Che papusa, oí , Son grupos , Yo tuve una novia , Cuando bronca el temporal , Hablame , Pobre corazón , Haceme caso a mí , Canto por no llorar , Rosa reseca , Botija linda , El pescador , Te fuiste, ¡yes, yes! , Adiós Argentina , Mi provinciana , La milonga azul , Dale celos , Raspail , Mocosita , La muchacha del circo , San Telmo .
