Gerber Products Company

The Gerber Products Company is an American company specializing in baby food and other baby products. The company was founded in 1927 in Fremont ( Michigan ) by Daniel Frank Gerber founded. Today the headquarters are in Parsippany , New Jersey . Gerber has 4,500 employees and sales of approximately 1.6 billion US dollars (2006). Gerber Products is now part of the Nestlé Group.

Daniel Frank Gerber was the owner of the Fremont Canning Company . This company produced canned fruits and vegetables. According to a pediatrician, Daniel's wife, Dorothy Gerber (1904–1988), fed her seven-month-old daughter Sally pureed foods. Daniel Gerber recognized the commercial viability of this baby food. He started producing and marketing this food in his company. In 1928 there were already five products on the market: peas, plums, carrots and spinach as well as beef and vegetable soup. Six months later, the products were sold across the US.

The brand became internationally known in the baby food industry and today offers 300 different food products in more than 50 countries. The cans are labeled in 16 different languages. In the US, Gerber has a market share of 83%.

In 1994, Sandoz acquired Gerber . Two years later, the merger with Ciba-Geigy resulted in the Novartis company . On April 12, 2007, Nestlé announced it would buy Gerber from Novartis for $ 5.5 billion.

Products

Life insurance has also been sold since 1967. The target audience is younger families. The Gerber Life Insurance Company is the largest direct marketer of life insurance in the US. It currently manages more than two million insurances worth more than $ 650 million.

In the early 1990s, Gerber wanted to enter the sugar-free food market. However , the food tailored to diabetic infants was taken out of the range after a few years when the desired sales success was not achieved. Fruit juices and health products were also launched. Health products have also been withdrawn from the market after unexpected side effects.
