The Gerberstadt-Gymnasium was the state high school of the city of Doberlug-Kirchhain , which remained in existence until the 2006/2007 school year and closed its school operations due to a lack of students. The Evangelical Gymnasium Doberlug-Kirchhain is currently replacing it in the same buildings.

history

The inauguration of the building as a school took place on October 17, 1889. In 1918 the school was attended by 834 students, who were divided into 17 classes and were taught by 14 teachers. In 1930 the school building was rebuilt, creating the auditorium . At the time of the Second World War , the school building was used as a hospital . On May 13, 1945, school classes were resumed. After a fire in 1948, the main building was extended by one floor. The first youth consecration took place in 1955 . In 1972 already 1064 pupils were taught, in that year the conversion from a central school to high school  3 or 1 took place. In June 1976 the school was renamed " Hermann Matern School". The polytechnic center or technical center was officially inaugurated in 1987. The observatory located on the school premises was inaugurated in 1988. From August 1, 1991, the school was considered a grammar school . Since 1996 the school has been called "Gerberstadt-Gymnasium". The computer cabinet in the Polytechnic Center was set up in 1998.

In 2003 the last 7th grade started school due to the “birth knock”. At the same time, the question of the further use of the building was a priority. The newly founded church “Evangelische Gymnasium Doberlug-Kirchhain” moved into the building at the same time and took it over completely in the 2006/2007 school year. This sealed the end of the school as “Gerberstadt-Gymnasium”, the remaining students were relocated to the expanded “Sängerstadtgymnasium Finsterwalde”. However, the building and parts of the inventory were retained under the new name and the Protestant church owners in their function. In the meantime, under the sponsorship of the diaconal work, there are around 300 pupils. In 2009 the upper school started with the 11th grade. Over 40 teachers are on duty.
