Gerhard "Gerd" Cyliax (born August 23, 1934 in Dortmund ; † May 17, 2008 ) was a German football player.

To person

Cyliax started playing football at TBV Mengede . In the 1954/55 season he finished ninth with the Red-Whites from the Volksgarten in the Landesliga Westfalen, Group 5. With the selection of Westphalia, he prevailed in the competition of the regional cup over the Middle Rhine (2: 1), Berlin (5: 0) and in the semifinals against Hamburg (1: 1 n.V. in Hagen; 6: 0 in Hamburg) and moved into the final. That took place on July 2, 1955 in Augsburg against defending champion Bavaria and ended with a 2-5 defeat for Westphalia. Cyliax formed the left wing of the representation of Westphalia with half-forward Günter Grandt from SC Westfalia Herne. For the 1955/56 season he moved to Westfalia Herne in the football Oberliga West , where he played until 1957 and scored 15 goals for the team in 46 league games from the stadium at Strünkede Castle . From 1958 to 1959 he was under contract with Preußen Münster . For Westfalia Herne and Preußen Münster he had completed 66 games with 18 goals in the Oberliga West.

He then played for Borussia Dortmund from 1959 to 1968 . He became German champion in 1963 with BVB and DFB Cup winner in 1965 . In 1966 he was part of the Borussia team, which won a European cup for a German soccer team for the first time in the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup in Hampden Park in Glasgow. From the quarter-finals against Atletico Madrid (1: 1; 1: 0) and the semi-finals against defending champions West Ham United (2: 1; 3: 1), he and Theo Redder formed the BVB defenders.

In 1966 he and the BVB team were awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf .

Gerd Cyliax played in the position of the left winger, but could also be used as the right winger. His running strength and speed were legendary. In 1956 he was part of the expanded Olympic squad, as he was able to run 100 m in less than eleven seconds. He was able to create scoring chances on the flank at high speed. During the first Bundesliga season 1963/64 he then moved to the right defender position.

Cyliax came to Borussia from 1959 to 1963 on 105 appearances with 22 goals in the Oberliga West and 101 appearances with six goals in the Bundesliga . From 1963 to 1968 there were eleven more appearances in the European Cup with two goals.

On March 27, 1957, he was in the German U-23 national team at the international match in Essen against Belgium as a left winger and contributed two hits to the 4-2 success of the DFB team. It was his only international assignment.

He was recently a member of Borussia Dortmund's council of elders, along with other well-deserved older players such as Heinrich Kwiatkowski , who died just a few days later .

Cyliax died on May 17, 2008 of complications from a stroke at the age of 73.
