Gerhard Bühringer

Gerhard Bühringer (born September 23, 1947 in Waiblingen ) is a German university professor, clinical psychologist and addiction researcher .

Education and professional activity

Gerhard Bühringer studied psychology at the University of Mannheim from 1966 to 1971 and then until 1973 at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . After receiving his diploma in 1973, he became head of the newly founded drug addiction project group at the Munich Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry and scientific director of the newly founded IFT Institute for Therapy Research in Munich. In 1981 he received his doctorate in social sciences from the University of Tübingen . In 2002 Bühringer took on an honorary professorship at the University of Konstanz and from 2005 to 2016 the newly created professorship for addiction research at the Institute for Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy at the Technical University of Dresden . He has held a senior professorship at the TU Dresden since 2016 and heads the working group “Dependent Behavior, Risk Analysis and Risk Management”. He is a licensed psychological psychotherapist.

Bühringer's scientific focus is on the epidemiology, etiology, prevention and therapy of substance use disorders and gambling disorders, the analysis of risk profiles and public health issues such as the development of nationwide patient documentation systems and therapeutic care structures as well as the planning and evaluation of regulatory options for the supply of alcoholic beverages and Gambling. He continues to deal with ethical issues and the social responsibility of scientists. So far, Bühringer has managed around 170 third-party funded projects that have been funded by EU authorities, the DFG, the BMBF, as well as by state and federal ministries, associations, state and private gaming providers, and gaming supervisory authorities. He worked in large research alliances such as ALICE-RAP (EU), AERIAL and regional addiction research networks ( BMBF ).

  • International Confederation of Addiction Research Organizations (ICARA)
  • PREMOS study on the substitution of opiate addicts

He is an expert for the Federal Aviation Office and for courts. In 2017 Bühringer was honored with the Diotima Prize of Honor from the German Psychotherapist Association .
