Athletic career

Ehlers came to the football section of SC Empor Rostock in 1959 at the age of eleven , where he went through the youth department, from 1966 at FC Hansa Rostock, which was spun off from the sports club. In November 1968 he was drafted into military service for 18 months, but during this time he was able to continue playing football in the second-rate GDR league with the Army Sports Association (ASG) Vorwärts Neubrandenburg .

In April 1969 Ehlers returned to Hansa Rostock, where he was used as a left winger on the last day of the 1968/69 season in the 2nd team, which was also playing in the GDR League. Until 1974 he was a permanent member of the second Hansa team, which also played continuously in the GDR league during this time. In the 1971/72 season Ehlers came to the only two league games. On the 10th and 13th matchday he was used as a left defender. By the end of the 1971/72 season he was a regular at Hansa II and came within three seasons to 72 missions in 82 played point games. In 1972/73 he was only used at Hansa II on the 1st match day, in 1973/74 he played only five point games.

For the 1974/75 season, FC Hansa Ehlers nominated again for the 2nd team, but he was no longer used there. Even later he no longer appeared in national football so that it remained with his record of two league games (no goal) and 78 GDR league games with nine goals. He remained connected to FC Hansa Rostock and was head of the FC youth boarding school from 1998 to 2012. His son Uwe , born in 1975, was a professional with the Rostockers for many years and is now part of the professional team's coaching staff.
