Gerhard Jorch (born September 24, 1951 in Neuhaus ) is a German pediatrician and neonatologist . From 1998 to 2018 he was director of the Clinic for General Pediatrics and Neonatology at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg .

Life

Gerhard Jorch was born in Neuhaus in 1951 as one of seven siblings. After graduating from high school, he studied human medicine at the University of Marburg until 1977 . He received a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation . He completed his specialist training as a pediatrician in 1982 at the University Children's Hospital in Münster and became senior physician in the same year. He completed his habilitation in 1985 and was senior physician in charge from 1989 to 1998. In the same year he was appointed to the University of Magdeburg and there director of the Clinic for General Pediatrics and Neonatology. He took over the management of the entire university children's clinic in 2006. After his retirement on September 30, 2018, Jorch shifted the focus of his work to the care of mother-child centers in China.

According to Focus Gesundheit 2017, Jorch ranks first among the best neonatologists together with Angela Kribs from the Children's Clinic of the University Clinic Cologne and Wolfgang Göpel from the Clinic for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine at the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein in Lübeck.

Jorch is married and has 9 children.

Research priorities

Jorch focuses on premature babies and the examinations of sudden infant deaths . As part of his research, he contributed to the fact that the death rate of infants from sudden infant death could be significantly reduced. He advises parents in clinic consultations and, since 2001, in internet forums and was one of the Stern experts for childhood diseases as early as 2008. His main areas are:

  1. Causes and prevention of brain damage in premature infants (Habilitation, DFG projects) Surfactant therapy in premature infants (head of approval studies)
  2. Sudden Infant Death (Pediatric Director of several multicenter epidemiological studies on "Sudden Infant Death")
  3. Lifestyle and child health (vaccination, sauna, baby sleep, smoking)
