Gerhard Mahler (television technician)

Gerhard Mahler (born September 15, 1931 in Hanover ; † July 5, 2019 ) was a German television technician. He was an employee of Walter Bruch and made a significant contribution to the development and distribution of the PAL color television system.

Life

Gerhard Mahler studied high frequency and telecommunications technology at the TH Hannover . He then worked, among others with Walter Bruch, from 1957 to 1980 on the basic development of radio and television technology at Telefunken in Hanover. In 1974 he successfully completed his doctorate. From 1980 to 1994 he was department head at the Heinrich Hertz Institute Berlin, working areas: HDTV, display technology, 3DTV. Until 1998 he was an honorary professor at the University of Hanover.

From 1995 he lived near Munich and occasionally took part in research events on current television technology.

Honor and publication

Mahler had been an honorary member of the Television and Cinema Technology Society since 1996 .

On March 17, 2005 he published The Basics of Television Technology - System Theory and Technology of Image Transmission. Springer, Berlin Heidelberg 2005, ISBN 978-3-540-21900-2 .

At the 25th FKTG conference in May 2012, Mahler was awarded the Richard Theile Medal for his outstanding achievements in the field of television.
