Gerhard Petschelt (born March 3, 1911 in Riegel , Neumarkt district , † December 8, 1979 in Bochum ) was the city ​​director of Bochum from 1952 to 1976 .

The doctor of law and social democrat was city director in Bochum from 1948 to 1952. He was appointed city director on January 24, 1952 and remained so for 24 years. During this time he campaigned strongly for the construction of the Ruhr University in Bochum . From 1968 to 1971 he was also chairman of the supervisory board of Vereinigte Elektrizitätswerke Westfalen (VEW). On March 15, 1976, at the age of 65, he resigned from the senior city director's office.

In 1976 he was awarded honorary citizenship of the city of Bochum. He was also made an honorary citizen of the Ruhr University. In 1990, for the 25th anniversary of the university, the bridge from the “Uni-Center” to the campus (commonly known as the Uni-Brücke) was named the Dr.-Gerhard-Petschelt-Brücke . A sign opposite the administration reminds of Petschelt.
