The Dr.-Gerhard-Petschelt-Brücke is a pedestrian bridge in the Querenburg district of Bochum . It opens up the campus of the Ruhr University Bochum .

history

The bridge, built using prestressed concrete technology , was released in May 1975. It crosses Universitätsstraße , which was opened in 1972, and connects the Uni-Center shopping center with the Ruhr University Bochum campus. Their length is more than 200 m. Under the bridge is the Ruhr-Universität stop of the former tram line 5, now the U35 tram , which has been nicknamed "CampusLinie" since June 2011.

It was not until 1990 that the bridge, known to this day as the "Uni-Brücke", received its official name; it was named after Gerhard Petschelt , a former Bochum city director . After a piece of handrail weighing tons broke off almost at the same time and fell next to Universitätsstraße, these elements were secured with additional reinforcement . The stop and its entrance area with two escalators were only roofed later. This construction measure included the installation of two passenger lifts. There are occasional dealers of used books and political initiative stands on the bridge.

The first buildings of the university on the eastern side of the bridge include the university administration building and the StudentServiceCenter on the left, the music center and the student house with the AStA and AKAFÖ Bochum on the right, the Bochum University Library and, behind it, the Forum and Auditorium Maximum , which are to the Count the central axis of the university campus.

At the traditional summer festival of the Ruhr University in Bochum, the bridge is a significant part of the lighting for the annual fireworks. The bridge is considered here "as a symbol of the connection between the Ruhr University and the city of Bochum".

In 2009 the bridge was part of the blockade during the 2009 education strike . In April 2010 a Juso campaign against tuition fees and against nuclear power took place on the bridge.

As part of a campus development concept, the university is planning to widen the bridge, which is to be further upgraded as an “inviting point of orientation” through an avenue of trees, wooden terraces, kiosk, copy shop and café to become a living bridge .
