Shannon SH-1

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Shannon SH-1 was for the F1 -designed race car in 1966 for the Grand Prix of Great Britain from Shannon was reported team and not so much back, designed as a round. After this mission, the car was repeatedly brought to the start in a modified form as the Shannon Mk. 1 in Formula 3 races.

background

The Shannon SH-1 was the fourth attempt by the British engineer and racing driver Paul Emery to gain a foothold in Formula 1 with a self-constructed car.

From 1956 to 1962, Paul Emery and his company Emeryson Cars designed various racing cars that were entered in different classes. In 1956 and 1962 , three Emeryson cars were factory-made for a Formula 1 race without reaching a world championship point. Emeryson Cars ceased operations in 1962 due to economic difficulties.

In the following year Emery founded together with racing driver Tony Settember the company Scirocco Powell Racing Cars , which in 1963 and 1964 competed in seven races of the Formula 1 world championship with self-constructed cars. The drivers were Settember, Ian Burgess and André Pilette . None of them reached the destination with the Scirocco.

After Scirocco had also ceased operations, Emery and Aiden Jones designed a Formula 1 car for the new three-liter championship, which was first held in 1966. The car was completed as a one-off in the first half of 1966.

technology

The Shannon SH-1 had an aluminum monocoque . Nothing is known about the design of the chassis. The drive was a 3.0 liter eight-cylinder engine from Coventry Climax , which was called Godiva . It was basically an engine from 1954 that had been developed for the 2.5 liter formula that was in effect at the time, but was not used at the time. Emeryson revised the old engine, increased the displacement and adapted the engine to the current regulations. The power of the engine was given as 312 hp.

Racing use in Formula 1

The Shannon SH-1 was entered by Team Shannon at the British Grand Prix , the fourth race of the season, which was held on July 16, 1966 at Brands Hatch . Driver was the former Lotus - and BRM -Pilot Trevor Taylor .

Taylor qualified for 18th out of 20 starting places. He was seven seconds behind Jack Brabham's pole time . He dropped out on the first lap of the race. Most sources believe that the gas tank cracked and Taylor had to give up due to a lack of fuel.

Further use

From 1967 to 1969 the car was used under the name Shannon Mk. 1 with different engines by various drivers in Formula 3 races. The last pilot was the Australian John Wilson.
