Gerhard Piekarski

Gerhard Otto Felix Piekarski (born October 5, 1910 in Berlin ; † October 9, 1992 ) was a German physician and parasitologist .

Life

Piekarski studied from 1930 at the University of Berlin and received his doctorate there in 1935. He then stayed there as a research assistant. From 1942 Piekarski was a councilor of the Reich Health Office in Berlin-Dahlem, and since 1943 private lecturer at the University of Bonn .

After the war, Piekarski became Professor of Medical Parasitology and Microbiology there in 1949 , a year later head of department at the Hygiene Institute, and full professor in 1963.

Services

Piekarski conducted research in the fields of parasitologists and microbiologists, particularly toxoplasmosis . In 1954 he published the textbook on parasitology with a special focus on human parasites . He was also co-editor of the magazine for parasite science in the archive for microbiology.

The German Society for Parasitology awards the Gerhard Piekarski Prize for a special doctoral thesis in the field of parasitology. The award goes back to a foundation established by Piekarski.
