Gerhard Schmid (politician)
Gerhard Karl Schmid (born May 5, 1946 in Straubing ), member of the SPD is a German politician.
Gerhard Schmid was a social democratic European politician and was a member of the European Parliament from 1979 to 2004. He is a biochemist by profession and also had a doctorate in this subject. From 1999 to 2004 he was also Vice-President of the European Parliament.
From 2000 to 2001 he chaired the special committee on the Echelon interception system . On September 5, 2001, Schmid put his final report to a vote in the EU Parliament. Parliament approved the report with a two-thirds majority, and Echelon's existence has been “official” ever since.
