Gerhard Schmidt (born April 21, 1940 in Kassel ) is a German politician ( SPD ).

Life and work

After graduating from secondary school in 1957, Schmidt graduated from college for home education. He then worked in the youth work of the city of Kassel, before he became state youth officer of the Protestant youth of the Palatinate in 1968 . After becoming a parish deacon in 1972, he was a religion teacher in Kaiserslautern from 1975 to 1987 . After studying part-time at the University of Frankfurt , he became a qualified pedagogue in 1976 and received his doctorate two years later. From 1975 to 1985 he was initially a speaker at the Protestant Academy in Saarland and then had a teaching position at the Protestant University of Applied Sciences in Ludwigshafen .

politics

Schmidt joined the SPD in 1968. In 1979 he was elected parliamentary group chairman in the municipal council of the Kaiserslautern-Süd community and in 1989 he was elected mayor of Krickenbach . In 1987 he became a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament , to which he was a member until he resigned in 2005 due to health reasons. There he was, among other things, chairman of the committee for education, science and further training and from 2001 until he left parliament he was vice-president of the state parliament.
